Heian Sandan or Peaceful Mind #3
This Heian kata is symbolic of the element fire, because of its rapid stance change and ability to move from technique to technique.
Heian Sandan introduces a few new key moves to the Shotokan student. Some of them include the Side Stance, Elbow blocks and strikes, pressing blocks, Spinning moves, and double blocks. Heian Sandan is also based on the T shape instead of the H layout we have done up to this point.
IMHO Heian Sandan is a much simpler kata to learn than either Heian Nidan or Shodan however just knowing the pattern is not the same as understanding the kata. Most students really enjoy Heian Sandan because it looks much more advanced than the kata they have done to date.
A few things to keep in mind when training and learning this kata is the ability to keep your balance while moving form stance to stance. One must also keep there posture and focus while preforming several of the move sequences Heian Sandan breaks out.
