Peaceful Mind number 5
The 5th kata in the Heian series is the last Heian Kata and in many ways symbolic of the end of one phase of your training in Shotokan.
Heian Godan brings out many new moves and ideas for the karate student to study. Many of these are things we will teach you in class but ability to control and throw and attacker is really brought out in Godan more so than the other Heian kata. In Godan you see the inside crescent kick used for the first time along with the hook punch, uppercut, and a variety of attacks and blocks one would not always consider. Maybe the most striking move in Heian Godan is the jump and fort he first time a Shotokan student leaves the ground lol.
The element that Heian Godan stands for is the The Void. Some call it space, some call it the unknown. This is very appropriate because a lot of what Godan teaches us is know clear at the surface to the novice student.
In many ways I think Godan may be the funnest Heian kata to preform but it is by far and away the most deadly once you understand and learn its applications.
