Tekki Shodan - Horse Ridding or Horse Warrior Number One
Most think the name of this kata is pretty obvious when they look at the Kiba Dachi or Horse Ridding stance it is preformed in. The Tekki Series uses no other stances than the Kiba Dachi. Thus on the surface this would seem like a very plausible name for the kata. Although he Japanese Samurai did rid horses the kata's origins are much deeper than that. About 1999 or so I was reading an article in Black Belt Magazine that covered the Tekki Series. The writer went on t point out how the Kiba Dachi was actually used in ground fighting. At that point the light came on.
There have been several land mark events in Martial Arts history. Funakoshi coming to America to teach, Bruce Lee taking MA to the big screen, and the start of the UFC in the early 90's.
Tekki now will bridge those gaps for the Shotokan student. Lee taught in Jeet Kun Do a idea called style without style. Many karate students especially looked down on the moves being use by Royce Gracie in the early UFC's. However what they did not understand is that the guard, mount, arm locks, breaks, chokes are all as big a part of shotokan as they are BJJ. The point was they were hidden by Master Funakoshi in the Tekki Kata.
If you still lost to what I am saying just lay on you back on one you belly and do a Tekki kata. The Kiba Dachi is now the guard or the mount. The strikes you do are now chokes, cranks, and other locks.
Tekki Shodan is one of my favorite kata the sure speed of the form and power it develops IMO makes it stand alone with the early kata one does. The development one makes is moving from the Heian Series to the Tekki series is light years. Tekki teaches the karate student many things standing up but a entire new world of things laying down. This is part of the hidden truth in Shotokan and part that many have forgotten or do not understand.
