The GSKA started in the winter of 1993 when Sensei Howie Harvey moved his club from Man to Gilbert. At that time classes were being held in the third floor of the old Domino Printing building that used to set across from Billie Ann's. The GSKA was a school of the JKA and AJKA during this time.
This was the first major Martial Arts school to be set up in Gilbert. Our classes had as many and 25-30 students any given night for training.
It was at this time when I (Gehrig Justice) started my training. Current GSKA Sempai's Lynn Justice, Mike Justice and Timmy Cline were already Sr. students under Sensei Harvey.
From 1993-1996 the GSKA ran pretty well. However just before my Shodan test in May of 1996 the GSKA left the AJKA and worked as an independent school. In 1998 after advancing to Nidan (Oct 17th 97) Sensei Harvey appointed (me) as one of his Assistant Instructors.
By the time I finished college the GSKA had moved to the Larry Joe Harless Community Center in Gilbert. This new building provide many of the training needs the old dojo did not have.
Sensei Harvey moved to NC in 2000 and asked that I keep the GSKA up and running. Fort he next 2 years I taught at the LJHCC but due other obligations and duties I went out looking for help.
The person I turned to to run the GSKA for the next few years was Sensei Larry Trogden. Sensei Trogden had trained Sensei Harvey and they had worked together in Man for many years before there clubs split ways. Sensei Trogden was a also a JKA school but and dropped out do to politics.
Although Sensei Trogden was teaching and running the GSKA I did register the GSKA with the Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association in the summer of 2003. Setting the stage for the day when I could return to teach year round.
Spring of 2005 Sensei Trogden moved all classes from Gilbert back to Man because of gas and time.
March 2006 I spoke to the LJHCC about restarting the GSKA and here we are.
