5. Mentality over Technique
Very simple statement. No matter what goes on in life. No Matter what our age, sex, weight, height, handicap, or other disability the only thing we ever have control of is how hard we train or preform the move.
In football we have an old saying along the lines of go hard or go home. I think is something to what Master Funakoshi had in mind. No matter if I do the technique bad if I do it full speed and at full force in a self defense or life or death situation it will be OK.
We all should push to be the best and do things perfectly but the fact is none of us is or ever will be perfect but we can try to be by always going hard.
The mind wins and the body loses. If I have made up my mind I can win because I'm better than you or I'm not afraid of you then chances are I am going to win even if I am the less skilled fighter. The inverse is also true if you are afraid of me or if you have doubts about your own ability then your chances of winning go down.
Ask any coach in any sport the hardest game to win is not the game you play of the field or court but the game you play with your players heads and trying not to get them to overlook anyone.
My mind must be ready at all times. I'm I train hard my mind Will be. I have seen many people who have great technique but when it comes time to spar they freeze up because they can not let there mind go and react.
A string mind will beat a strong body and a weak mind will lose to a weak body.
If one ever hopes to be good at Martial Arts they must accept that training is MUCH more mental than it ever is physical. This is why I am a firm believer in the fact that young kids should not wear black belts. But thats another post for another day.
