Do you want to be a fighter? Ask anybody that has been in a fight longer than a minute, or watch an MMA fight and you will realize that simply practicing your kicks and punches will not build your heart to withstand a high level of intense cardio exercise. If you gas in a fight, and the other fighter doesn't you will more than likely lose the fight, or possibly everybody will see what you had for lunch...embarrassing. If you want to test this have someone time a five minute grappling match or punch a bag for five minutes, and then see how tough it is; just think if you are fighting for you life it might last longer than that.
What training works to build your cardio? Running, biking, and swimming. Running is my favorite and also the easiest, but if you are worried about your knees then I suggest the other two. You need to determine your target heart rate. This can be accomplished by using numerous Internet sites. For example, I'm 24 years old with above average cardio and that places my target heart rate between 137 and 176.
If you eat McDonald's everyday then you should just forget about improving your run time or being the best fighter. Fast food, greasy foods, soda, candy, and anything else included in junk food will destroy your chances of shaping your body into a fighter. Do some research on athlete's diets, and I bet it doesn't include any of the above mentioned foods. Eat enough protein, vegetables, fruit, and keep your diet under 20 grams of saturated fat a day. The number one sin in a healthy diet is eating anything with trans fat. It is suggested a person shouldn't eat over 2 grams of trans fat a week, but KFC--now with healthier chicken because of lack of trans fat--still has 3.5 grams of trans fat in one biscuit.
People can preach about losing weight and exercising, but it will only happen if you really want it. That doesn't mean you go on the Hollywood diet and just stop eating. A five-year-old will fight you and then break you in two. Stay within 1200 hundred calories a day or more. It takes heart to get into shape. Ask yourself if you would rather sit and watch t.v., or go and improve your cardio so you can be the best fighter. Bruce Lee ran 4 miles in 24 minutes; if you do your math that is 6 minute miles. Next time your at the track attempt that, and you will realize Bruce Lee would have not beaten you during the fight but in his training.
